Catherine “Cathy” Merrell Palmer, a 64-year-old woman from Powell, Tennessee, died on March 13, 2023, in what was later determined to be a murder-suicide. Deputies with the Knox County Sheriff's Office discovered her body, alongside that of her 73-year-old husband, Sammie Ray Palmer, at their home on Chambord Way after being called to perform a welfare check.
Both individuals were employees of Knox County, with Cathy working in the Property Assessor's Office and Sammie employed by the Sheriff's Office.
An investigation into the deaths was launched, and the circumstances surrounding the incident were initially unclear. However, authorities stated early on that they were investigating the possibility of a murder-suicide. The Knox County Regional Forensics Center conducted autopsies to determine the causes of death. The investigation was in its early stages, and officials withheld the identities of the couple until their next-of-kin could be notified.
Months later, in December 2023, the Knox County Sheriff's Office released the findings of their internal investigation, which concluded that Sammie Palmer shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself. The investigation revealed that the couple had been experiencing marital problems. According to reports, Cathy Palmer had confided in friends that she felt her husband was 'smothering her.' The couple had reportedly argued during a lunch outing the weekend before their deaths. The investigation found that Cathy Palmer had been shot twice in the upper chest with a 9mm pistol that was recovered at the scene. Sammie Palmer also died from a gunshot wound to the chest. With the conclusion of the investigation, the case was closed.
