On a tragic day in Memphis, Tennessee, 36-year-old Candid Sanders, a Black female, was found shot to death inside a car on January 10, 2019. The vehicle was located near the intersection of Imogene Street and Dwight Road. Alongside her in the car was the body of Ronald Terry, who was identified as a former leader of the Vice Lords gang. The circumstances surrounding their deaths were initially unclear, and for a time, no arrests were made in connection with the double homicide, leaving a
community searching for answers.
The investigation into the deaths of Sanders and Terry would eventually become linked to a larger federal case targeting a violent street gang. This broader investigation, part of the Department of Justice's Violent Crime Initiative, focused on the criminal activities of the Unknown Vice Lords –Ghost Mob. The violent deaths of Terry and Sanders were the catalyst for a chain of events that would lead to federal indictments and convictions.
In February 2024, a federal grand jury returned a superseding indictment charging three alleged members of the UVL–Ghost Mob: Edward Earl Allen Jr. of San Bernardino, California, and Vincent Grant and Deandre Rodgers, both of Memphis. The indictment accused them of causing the death of an individual through the use of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, with the alleged motive being to gain entrance to, maintain, and increase their positions within the gang.
Further developments in the case came to light in June of 2025. It was reported that Vincent Grant, also known as 'V Slash,' was convicted by a federal jury for his involvement in a gang-related murder. Court documents and trial evidence revealed that following the murder of their leader, Ronald Terry, and his girlfriend, Candid Sanders, the gang sought retaliation. While the specific charges directly related to Candid Sanders's murder are not detailed, the legal proceedings made it clear that her death was the event that initiated the broader law enforcement action against the Ghost Mob gang. The trial for the codefendants in the 'Ghost Mob gang killing' case, which began with the murders of Terry and Sanders, was set to proceed, marking a significant step towards bringing closure to a case that began with a brutal act of violence on a Memphis street.
