A graduate of Howard High School's class of 2010, Young was a father who was deeply cherished by his community for his passion for helping others. Streets, gunfire erupted, shattering the night's calm. When the shooting ceased, Cordell Young lay fatally wounded. Another individual with him was also struck by the gunfire but survived with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
