On a late summer evening in Friendsville, Tennessee, a domestic dispute escalated into a violent and ultimately tragic event. On August 25, 2023, 68-year-old Jeffrey Scott West was at his Quarry Hollow Road home with his partner and her 24-year-old son, Kyle W. Spitze. An argument broke out between West and Spitze, the details of which remain known only to those present. The verbal altercation took a grave turn when West produced a handgun.
The tense moments that followed were captured on video by Spitze. In the footage, West can be seen confronting Spitze, threatening him with the firearm. Despite the presence of Spitze's mother, who attempted to de-escalate the situation, West fired the weapon, the bullet grazing Spitze's right ear. Following the gunshot, Spitze and his mother fled the residence and immediately contacted emergency services.
Blount County Sheriff's deputies responded to the shooting call around 8:15 p.m. and found Spitze and his mother outside the home. While Spitze was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, a more dangerous situation was unfolding inside. West had barricaded himself within the residence, prompting a significant law enforcement response that included the Sheriff's Crisis Negotiations and SWAT teams. For hours, negotiators attempted to make contact with West, urging him to surrender peacefully.
Their efforts, however, were met with silence. Shortly before 11 p.m., after attempts to establish communication failed, deputies deployed a K-9 unit into the home. Inside, they discovered Jeffrey Scott West, who was deceased. Authorities later confirmed that West had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. An autopsy was ordered to be conducted at the Knox County Regional Forensic Center. The incident, which began as a domestic argument, concluded with one man dead and another injured, leaving behind a scene of violence and loss.
