Patrolman Clarence E. Hamler, aged 27, of the Chattanooga Police Department, was tragically shot and killed on August 14, 1977. He was killed while intervening in a robbery at the Red Food Store on S. Broad Street. Patrolman Hamler had stopped at the grocery store to visit his brother when two armed robbers entered. As he rounded a corner, one of the suspects shot him in the head and neck. Patrolman Hamler's brother picked up his gun and fatally wounded one of the suspects.
