In the late afternoon of April 12, 2015, a sense of tragedy befell a neighborhood in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Sixteen-year-old Kentrell Provens, a Black male, was walking along Germantown Road when the sound of a gunshot shattered the day's calm. Provens was struck once in the chest. Emergency services were called to the scene, and the young man was rushed to a nearby hospital with a life-threatening injury.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his wound that evening.
Family and friends of the Brainerd High School student were left reeling, describing him as an energetic and happy person who loved life and had no known enemies. They struggled to comprehend who would perpetrate such a violent act against him. The Chattanooga Police Department launched a homicide investigation into the teen's death. While they stated that they did not believe Provens himself was a validated gang member, they did suggest that he may have had connections or associations with individuals involved in gangs.
In the days following the shooting, police appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the person or persons responsible for Kentrell Provens' death.
