On a summer night in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a dispute at an apartment party escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 25-year-old Rigoberto Jarquin, a Hispanic male. The incident unfolded on July 14, 2019, at the Douglas Heights Apartments, a complex near the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus. Jarquin was attending a party with friends when a confrontation ignited with another group who were denied entry.
The disagreement quickly intensified, leading to the second group attempting to force their way into the apartment.
The situation took a deadly turn when Toddie Woods, a member of the group that had been denied entry, was handed a gun by his brother, Omerrieal Woods. Toddie Woods then fired approximately 15 shots through the closed apartment door. Inside, Rigoberto Jarquin was struck by multiple bullets and was later found deceased on the apartment floor. The medical examiner determined he sustained four gunshot wounds and died as a result of the shooting. Two other men inside the apartment were also injured in the gunfire; one was shot in the shoulder and the other in the thigh.
The investigation into the shooting, aided by surveillance footage that captured the events, led to the arrests of three individuals. Toddie Woods, the shooter, was initially charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. He later pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder, receiving a 20-year prison sentence for the murder with concurrent eight-year sentences for the attempted murders.
Omerrieal Woods, who provided the firearm to his brother, faced charges of facilitation of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. He was ultimately sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of facilitation of reckless homicide and two counts of facilitation of attempted aggravated assault. A third individual, Hyacinth Taylor, was also implicated for his role in passing the gun to Omerrieal Woods. Taylor pleaded guilty to facilitation of reckless homicide, two counts of attempted aggravated assault, and theft, which resulted in a suspended sentence and probation. During court proceedings, both Toddie and Omerrieal Woods were identified as validated gang members.
