The incident occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. when Ramirez got into an argument with three acquaintances. The confrontation escalated when Ramirez requested to borrow a handgun from one of the men, identified as Jorge Godoy, a 22-year-old Latino. Godoy refused Ramirez's request and subsequently shot him. Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:47 p.m.

On January 5, 2017, Godoy was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison for the murder of Daniel Ivan Ramirez.
