In a quiet street in Martin, Tennessee, the life of 28-year-old Nicko Santiago, a male, was tragically cut short on November 1, 2023. On that day, police responded to a call on Hillsboro Street and found Santiago suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported by ambulance and then airlifted to a hospital in Memphis for advanced medical care. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led the Martin Police Department to a suspect. The following day, with the assistance of the Weakley County Sheriff's Department, authorities arrested 56-year-old Lawrence Michael Rodriguez at a private residence on Sidonia Road. Rodriguez was taken into custody without incident and initially faced serious charges, including first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a weapon, and unlawful possession of a weapon. He was subsequently booked into the Weakley County Detention Center.
The legal process that followed brought a resolution to the case in the Weakley County Circuit Court. In a plea agreement, Lawrence Michael Rodriguez pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder. As a result of his plea, the other charges against him were dismissed. On September 23, 2024, a judge sentenced Rodriguez to 20 years in prison for his role in the death of Nicko Santiago. The weapon used in the incident was also forfeited to the Martin Police Department as part of the judgment.
