A quiet Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Tennessee, was shattered by violence on March 10, 2024, leaving two women dead and a community in shock. Inside a white Dodge Challenger parked on Pine Circle, police discovered the bodies of 29-year-old Nicole J. Lane and 26-year-old Deshawna M. Traughber, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel attempted to save Nicole at the scene, but her injuries proved fatal. Deshawna was pronounced dead when officers arrived.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a suspect, 27-year-old Monray Vontez Johnson of Nashville, who was reportedly Traughber's boyfriend. An aunt of the suspect, who lived nearby, told police she saw him standing next to the vehicle right after the shooting. When she confronted him and asked what he had done, he allegedly replied, 'The B**** is dead,' before fleeing. This eyewitness account, coupled with cell phone data placing him at the location, led to his swift apprehension.
Johnson was found a short time later hiding in another vehicle at the intersection of 21st and Blair Street and was taken into custody by the Springfield Police Department. He has since been charged with two counts of criminal homicide and is being held without bond at the Robertson County Detention Facility. While a motive for the double homicide has not been publicly released, authorities have stated they do not believe there is any further danger to the public.
Nicole Lane was a mother to a daughter, Bianca, and a son, Nicholas. She was remembered as an energetic and strong-willed woman who was a devoted mother and worked as a Relationship Banker at Bank of America. Her life was celebrated at a service at Greater Missionary Baptist Church in Clarksville, Tennessee.
