In Memphis, Tennessee, on the evening of April 30, 2024, a heated argument between roommates over a refusal to move out escalated into a fatal encounter. Martavion S. Carmichael, a 21-year-old Black male, was shot and killed by his 19-year-old roommate, Jaquavion Walker. The incident occurred in The Heights neighborhood, in the 3200 block of Hardin Avenue, where Memphis Police responded to a shooting call at approximately 7:44 p.m. and found Carmichael deceased at the scene from gunshot wounds.
The dispute reportedly began when Walker insisted that Carmichael leave their shared residence, and Carmichael refused. According to court records, the argument intensified, with Carmichael allegedly telling Walker he would have to shoot him to make him leave. In response, Walker retrieved a firearm and shot Carmichael outside the home. Reports indicate that Carmichael was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
Jaquavion Walker remained at the scene and was taken into custody by the responding officers. During questioning, he admitted to shooting Carmichael, citing the argument over Carmichael's refusal to vacate the premises as the reason. Walker was subsequently charged with second-degree murder. His bond was initially recommended at $1 million, and he was scheduled for a court appearance on May 2, 2024.
In August 2024, a Shelby County Grand Jury indicted Jaquavion Walker on the charge of second-degree murder. Following the indictment, he remained in the Shelby County Jail with his bond set at $750,000.
