In the late hours of a Sunday evening in North Memphis, a dispute escalated into a fatal act of violence that claimed the life of 34-year-old Shamon Worles. The tragic events unfolded on March 31, 2019, outside a residence on Carpenter Street.
That night, two men had arrived at Worles's home to borrow money. As one of the men went inside, a neighbor, identified as 50-year-old Tony Evans, approached the car that remained parked outside.
An argument reportedly broke out, during which Evans pistol-whipped the driver and attempted to pull him from the vehicle. Hearing the commotion, Worles and another man rushed out of the house to intervene. It was then that Evans allegedly opened fire.
Worles was struck in the neck as he tried to retreat back into the house. He was rushed to the Regional Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal. The driver of the car was not physically harmed, though the rear window of his vehicle was shattered by the gunfire.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Tony Evans turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, and three counts of employing a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony. In August 2019, a grand jury indicted Evans on these charges, and he was held in the Shelby County Jail. The case was handled by the Shelby County District Attorney's Office.
