On the evening of June 27, 2024, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the life of 37-year-old Margarette Keitoria Clark Barksdale, a Black/African American female, was tragically cut short in what authorities have described as a murder-suicide. Responding to reports of gunshots, Murfreesboro Police arrived at a townhome on Nightshade Drive around 8 p.m. to a grim discovery. Inside an upstairs bedroom, they found Margarette and her 29-year-old boyfriend, James Shannon, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of first responders from the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department and Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services, both individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene. The preliminary investigation conducted by the Murfreesboro Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division pointed to a domestic violence incident that culminated in Shannon fatally shooting Barksdale before turning the gun on himself. Investigators found no evidence of forced entry, leading them to believe no other individuals were involved.
Margarette was a mother of three children and was remembered as a vibrant and generous person with a bright soul that touched everyone she met. She had attended Middle Tennessee State University and was employed at Elevance Health. Her death, a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence, left a void in the lives of her family and friends. As the suspect, James Shannon, died at the scene, there were no arrests or subsequent legal proceedings.
