In the late hours of Memorial Day, May 31, 2021, the life of 18-year-old Taia Nagena Bryant, a Black/African American woman, was tragically cut short in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Bryant was inside her car when she was shot multiple times, an act of violence that led to her vehicle crashing and becoming engulfed in flames in the 1600 block of Leaf Avenue. Responding officers attempted to extinguish the fire and rescue her, but the intensity of the flames prevented their efforts. Bryant sustained severe burns over her entire body and was pronounced dead at Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital. An autopsy later confirmed that she had died from a gunshot wound to the head.
The investigation into Bryant's death was a complex undertaking involving the Murfreesboro Police Department and the Fire Marshal's Office. There were two other passengers in the car at the time of the shooting who managed to escape on foot. Their information, along with video footage from a nearby gas station and other evidence, proved vital to the case. This evidence led investigators to identify and arrest two juvenile siblings, 16-year-old Dontorius Hamler and 17-year-old Donzalai Hamler. The case against the Hamler brothers was transferred from juvenile to adult court in Rutherford County.
In 2023, a grand jury indicted the Hamler siblings on multiple charges, including second-degree murder, two counts of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and reckless endangerment. A plea deal was eventually negotiated between the District Attorney's Office, the courts, and Bryant's family. Dontorius and Donzalai Hamler are now serving their sentences in the Bledsoe County Correctional Complex. After receiving credit for time served, their sentences are expected to end in 2030 and 2031, respectively. Despite these convictions, authorities believe that others were involved in the incident, and the investigation into the death of Taia Nagena Bryant remains ongoing, with the possibility of additional arrests.
