On a summer day in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of a young man was tragically cut short by gunfire. Jarvis Jackson Jr., an 18-year-old Black male, was shot on August 14, 2024. The fatal incident occurred at a convenience store in South Memphis, near the intersection of East McLemore Avenue and Edith Street.
Following the shooting, an investigation led law enforcement to identify a suspect, who was just 15 years old at the time of the offense.
The teenager was taken into custody and charged in connection with Jarvis's death. The investigation also linked the same suspect to a separate fatal shooting that happened a month later in September 2024, which claimed the life of 19-year-old Devin Graham during a robbery on Saxon Avenue.
The suspect was identified as Maximus Tate. Given the severity of the allegations in both homicide cases, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office filed a motion to have Tate’s case transferred from the juvenile court system to be handled in adult criminal court. A Juvenile Court judge reviewed the facts presented by prosecutors and granted the request.
In March 2026, Maximus Tate, then 16, was officially booked into the Shelby County Jail. His cases were transferred to adult court, where he now faces two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Jarvis Jackson and Devin Graham. As of his transfer, Tate was being held without bond while awaiting further legal proceedings.
