In the early hours of October 20, 2024, a party at the Picture Perfect Event Center on North Highland Avenue in Jackson, Tennessee, turned into a scene of tragedy. Amidst the gathering, gunfire erupted, leading to chaos and leaving nine people with gunshot wounds. Among the injured was 25-year-old Lar'Curia ReShawn Roberson, a female who sustained gunshot injuries to her abdomen and forearm.
Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries later that morning.
The Jackson Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the deadly shooting. With the help of public cooperation and tips received through Crime Stoppers, authorities identified 22-year-old Matthew Berry as the primary suspect in the case. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and police sought public assistance in locating him.
Shortly after being identified as a suspect, Matthew Berry surrendered to law enforcement and was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with First Degree Felony Murder and Attempted Second Degree Murder. On October 25, 2024, Berry appeared in court for his arraignment, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. Citing the severity of the charges, the state requested that he be held without bond, a request that the judge granted. Berry was remanded into custody without the possibility of bail as the investigation into the tragic death of Lar'Curia Roberson and the injuries of eight others continues, with the possibility of additional charges being filed.
