In the early hours of a March morning in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, the life of 24-year-old Charles Carr was cut short. Known affectionately as 'Moo,' Carr was a former standout football player at Hickory High School, where he set a record as Mercer County's all-time leading rusher. His athletic prowess had earned him a scholarship to California University of Pennsylvania.
On March 21, 2023, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Hermitage Police responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection
of East State Street and Shady Side Drive. There, they found Charles Carr with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The incident was quickly ruled a homicide, marking the first for the city's new police chief.
The investigation swiftly identified a suspect: Zechariah Aheven Sewell. Police announced that they were actively searching for Sewell, who they considered armed and dangerous. It was revealed that Carr and Sewell knew each other, though the specific motive for the shooting was not immediately made public. The search for Sewell concluded with his capture, bringing the initial phase of the investigation to a close.
Zechariah Sewell was ultimately charged in connection with Carr's death. In a development that caused anguish for Carr's family, Sewell was sentenced to 13 to 35 years in prison for third-degree murder.
