On March 28, 2023, 19-year-old Javien Perch from Reading, Pennsylvania, was last seen walking south on North 10th Street, reportedly heading to a friend's house. When he failed to return home, his family reported him missing to the Reading Police Department on March 30. The family conducted their own search, utilizing a cellphone application to track his movements and discovering one of his earbuds near Moss Street, raising further concerns about his safety.
Tragically, on April 5, 2023, Perch's body was discovered in a wooded area along Oak Lane near the Reading and Alsace Township line. The Reading Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation, noting the suspicious circumstances surrounding his disappearance and death. An autopsy later revealed that Perch had been shot ten times, indicating an execution-style killing.
In the following months, authorities intensified their investigation, leading to significant developments by late August 2023. Three individuals were charged in connection with Perch's kidnapping and murder: Hector L. Torres, 20, of Leesport; and two 19-year-olds from Reading, Vashon A. Winfield and Ansari Jalal. Torres, already incarcerated on unrelated charges, was arraigned on counts including first, second, and third-degree murder, conspiracy, and kidnapping. Winfield was apprehended and held without bail, while Jalal remained at large, prompting authorities to seek public assistance in locating him.
Investigators revealed that Perch was forcibly abducted into a vehicle while walking on North 10th Street. The suspects demanded his cellphone passwords, logged out of his accounts, and transported him to a secluded area along Oak Lane. There, they led him up a slope and fatally shot him multiple times before fleeing the scene. The motive behind this brutal act remains unclear, though it is believed that Perch had prior negative interactions with his assailants.
The arrests brought some measure of relief to Perch's grieving family, who had been actively involved in the search and investigation.
