In the evening hours of April 13, 2023, 16-year-old Nafis Betrand-Hill was standing with a group of people just a short distance from his home in North Philadelphia. The scene was near 23rd Street and West Montgomery Avenue when a gray vehicle, later identified as a Kia, pulled up. Two young men emerged from the car and opened fire, striking Betrand-Hill multiple times. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital but succumbed to his injuries a short time later. The male victim, known to his loved ones as 'Fisso' or 'Bo,' was a student at Sayre High School and was also attending barber school on the weekends.
The investigation into the shooting led police to the getaway car, which had been reported stolen. Inside the vehicle, authorities discovered a handgun. In the weeks and years that followed, three individuals were arrested in connection with the killing. In May 2023, Aysir Clarke, a rapper known as Lil Bape, and Ranief Allen were taken into custody. However, at his trial, Clarke was acquitted of the charges. Ranief Allen, on the other hand, was convicted of third-degree murder and other related crimes for his involvement in the shooting and was awaiting sentencing.
More than two years after the incident, in July 2025, police arrested a third suspect, 20-year-old Zaakir McClendon. He was charged with murder, conspiracy, and other related offenses for his alleged role in Betrand-Hill's death. While police have suggested the shooting may have been connected to an ongoing dispute between teenagers in the area, the victim's family has stated that the trials did not reveal a specific motive, leaving them with unanswered questions about why their son was targeted. The family continues to mourn their loss, describing their family as broken in the wake of the tragedy.
