In the early morning hours of November 22, 2020, in the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia, 12-year-old Sadeek Clark-Harrison, a Black male, was awakened by a knock at the front door of his family's home on Ditman Street. It was around 2:45 a.m., and the young boy, who was home with his grandmother and 10-year-old sister, went to see who was there. His mother, Lisa Clark, later recounted that she heard a man's voice call out her son's name, 'Sadeek! Sadeek!'.
Before he could even open the door, a single shot was fired through the glass, striking the child in the head. Officers arrived within minutes to find him bleeding from his mouth. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene shortly after 3 a.m.
The sudden and violent death of the sixth-grader, who was remembered by his family as a good boy who loved to build things and had the potential to be an engineer or an architect, sent shockwaves of grief through his community. His mother's raw anguish was palpable as she spoke of her youngest son, her 'king, my son, my star, my moon, my shine,' which had been so senselessly extinguished. A neighbor recalled how Sadeek had recently helped save his life during a diabetic episode. In the days that followed, a vigil was held outside the family home, where mourners gathered with balloons and candles to remember a life cut tragically short. His aunt, Alicia Johnson, became a vocal advocate, demanding an end to the gun violence that was claiming the lives of so many children in the city.
The investigation into Sadeek's murder was immediately hampered by a lack of evidence. The shooter had fired through the door, leaving no clear description for police to pursue. Investigators recovered a single nine-millimeter shell casing from the porch, a small piece of evidence in a case with no clear motive. Police did not believe Sadeek or his family were the intended targets. A month after the shooting, in December 2020, the Philadelphia Police Department released surveillance video showing two men they identified as suspects, hoping to generate new leads. A $20,000 reward was offered for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Despite the video and the reward, no arrests have been made in the case, and the killing of Sadeek Clark-Harrison remains unsolved, a painful open wound for his family and a stark reminder of the city's ongoing struggle with gun violence.
