Jarell Jackson, a 26-year-old male, had just returned from a Caribbean vacation with his lifelong friend, Shahjahan McCaskill, also 26, in October of 2020. After dropping his luggage at his mother's house in West Philadelphia, Jackson offered to give McCaskill a ride home. As he was pulling out of a parking spot at 57th and Locust Streets on October 27, 2020, a black SUV drove past and then made a sudden U-turn.
In an instant, the world erupted in gunfire as numerous shots were fired into the vehicle.
Jackson's mother ran to the car to find both men grievously wounded. Family members pulled Jackson from the driver's seat and rushed him to the hospital in a police car, while a neighbor transported McCaskill in the back of his truck. Tragically, both men were pronounced dead at the hospital just twenty minutes later. The investigation later revealed that they had been shot 24 times. The two friends were tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time, victims of a violent feud they had no part in.
Authorities determined that Jackson, a health technician at Jefferson who also mentored troubled teens, and McCaskill, a cancer survivor and small-business owner, were mistakenly targeted. The perpetrators were allegedly seeking retaliation against a rival group in an ongoing and violent dispute that was being fueled by social media. In the weeks and months that followed the shooting, the Philadelphia Police Department made several arrests in connection with the murders. Three teenagers, ranging in age from 15 to 18, were identified as the shooters and taken into custody. Additionally, a 15-year-old was charged for his role as the getaway driver. The investigation revealed that several of the teens had affiliations with a West Philadelphia street crew and had even boasted about it on Instagram.
