The sound of gunfire, with a gunshot detection system registering 11 rounds, prompted a swift response from Pittsburgh Police. When officers arrived at the scene around 7:30 a.m., they found Derrick critically injured. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his wounds proved to be fatal. As law enforcement worked to save Derrick's life, other officers spotted a male fleeing the scene with a firearm. The individual, later identified as 15-year-old Jaymier Perry, a fellow student at Oliver Citywide Academy, was taken into custody without further incident, and a weapon was recovered.

Krall, remembered their son as a funny kid who loved playing basketball and video games and was a great brother to his four siblings. Jaymier Perry was arrested and charged as an adult with criminal homicide, possession of a firearm by a minor, and carrying a firearm without a license. He was transported to the Allegheny County Jail to await legal proceedings. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, though there were reports of a possible prior incident between the two teenagers.
