Emerald H. Nugent Jr. was a 19-year-old Black/African American male from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, whose life ended in the early morning hours of September 22, 2023, after gunfire erupted inside Oakhurst Homes. Authorities said the shooting happened around 4:11 a.m. in Building 29 of the housing complex. What began as a private encounter inside an apartment turned deadly, leaving Emerald fatally wounded and a woman injured.
Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees later identified Emerald as the person killed in the shooting and said he died from multiple gunshot wounds. His death was ruled a homicide. Emerald was described in obituary information as a caring, social young man who loved being around people, loved his mother, and had grown up working alongside his father in drywalling and painting. He had graduated from Johnstown High School in 2021 and was also a father, survived by his young son, Emiri, along with his parents, siblings, grandparents, extended family, and friends.
Investigators soon identified Jashon Gordon, then 22, of Johnstown, as the suspect in the shooting. Authorities said Gordon was accused of using a firearm to kill Emerald and wound the female victim. Early reports indicated that the shooting followed some kind of dispute inside the apartment. Witness information later reported by authorities suggested Gordon had gone to the apartment asking to see his child before the violence unfolded. Police recovered the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting, and the injured woman was expected to survive.
Gordon was charged in Cambria County with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, and carrying a firearm without a license. After the shooting, authorities said he fled Pennsylvania. The U.S. Marshals-led Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force took up the search and coordinated with law enforcement in Columbus, Ohio. In October 2023, Gordon was arrested in Ohio without incident with help from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, Columbus police SWAT, and a K-9 team. He was held while awaiting extradition back to Pennsylvania.
The case moved through court after Gordon’s arrest. A preliminary hearing was postponed at one point after his defense requested more time to prepare, emphasizing the seriousness of the homicide case. Gordon ultimately entered a plea deal with the Cambria County District Attorney’s Office. Court records and local reporting stated that he pleaded no contest to one count of third-degree homicide.
Gordon was later sentenced to 10 to 40 years in prison for the Oakhurst Homes shooting. The sentence closed the criminal case with a conviction tied to Emerald’s killing, but it did not erase the suddenness of the loss. Emerald’s death left behind a family mourning a son, father, brother, and friend, and it turned an early morning dispute inside a Johnstown apartment into a homicide case that stretched from Pennsylvania to Ohio before ending in a decades-long prison sentence.
