On July 17, 2015, Thomas Peebles, a 25-year-old male from Monroeville, PA, was tragically shot and killed in Johnstown, PA. The incident occurred during a drug deal gone wrong at the Solomon Homes housing complex. Peebles had agreed to sell three bricks of heroin to three men from Mount Union and McConnellsburg, PA.
The suspects, Perry Henderson , Kenneth O. Simmons , and Stanley Leo Spriggs , traveled to Johnstown to purchase the drugs. During the transaction, Henderson and Simmons drew their weapons and a struggle ensued. Peebles was shot by Henderson and died at the scene. Spriggs, who stayed in the car, was apprehended along with Henderson and Simmons as they attempted to flee to the Altoona area.
All three suspects were arrested and charged with homicide. Henderson and Spriggs were convicted of second-degree murder and received life sentences. Simmons pled guilty to third-degree murder and was sentenced to 11 to 25 years in prison. The convictions were upheld by the Pennsylvania Superior Court, and the state Supreme Court denied further appeals.
