In the early morning hours of October 4, 2023, the streets of Pittsburgh's Hill District were shattered by the sound of gunfire. When police responded to a 16-round ShotSpotter alert on the 2300 block of Webster Avenue at approximately 3 a.m., they discovered a grim scene. Thirty-three-year-old Robert Lee Freeman Jr., a male resident of Pittsburgh, was found lying in the street at the intersection of Somers Street and Webster Avenue, having been shot in the head.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nearby, officers found a second victim, 16-year-old Cameron Blue-Gray, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The double homicide stunned the community and left family and friends grappling with the sudden and violent loss of two lives.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Pittsburgh police began an investigation into the deaths of Freeman and Blue-Gray.
