In the early evening of June 22, 2024, Desmond William Lane, a 26-year-old male, was fatally shot in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. The events that tragically cut his life short unfolded around 7:50 p.m. in the 430 block of Ross Avenue, where police were called to the scene of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. Lane on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds to the back of his head, arms, legs, and torso.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a silver BMW leaving the area shortly after the gunshots rang out. This vehicle became a key piece of evidence for the Allegheny County Homicide Unit as they launched their investigation. Detectives recovered seven spent bullet casings from the scene. By obtaining security camera footage from a nearby car wash, investigators were able to piece together the moments leading up to the fatal shooting. The footage showed the BMW pull up, and two individuals, one of whom was Desmond Lane, approached the car. A man wearing glasses was seen exiting the back of the vehicle and speaking with them before they walked away.
The surveillance video further revealed that the other man who had approached the car with Lane returned to the vehicle and spoke with the man in glasses. Lane was then seen walking back to the car carrying a large white bag and getting inside. At this point, the man with glasses positioned himself behind Lane. A struggle ensued as a gun was held to Lane's side and he was pulled from the car. The footage showed a man shooting at Lane multiple times, with evidence suggesting another person also fired at him from inside the BMW.
The investigation led to the arrest of 24-year-old Amir Johnson of Pittsburgh on November 22, 2024. He has been charged with homicide, robbery, and carrying a firearm without a license in connection with the death of Desmond William Lane. Following his arrest, Johnson was held in the Allegheny County Jail without bail.
