In the early hours of November 1, 2023, a tragic shooting occurred in Homestead, Pennsylvania, resulting in the death of 38-year-old Eric Stephens from McKees Rocks. At approximately 1:10 a.m., Allegheny County Police responded to reports of gunfire in the 300 block of East 12th Avenue, near the intersection with Ann Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered two male victims with gunshot wounds outside a residence. Eric Stephens was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Following an investigation, authorities identified 36-year-old Homestead resident Jonque Pettiford as the primary suspect in the shooting. Detectives believe that Pettiford shot both victims multiple times following an altercation outside the residence. Consequently, Pettiford has been charged with homicide, attempted homicide, and aggravated assault. He is described as approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing around 180 pounds, and is considered potentially armed and dangerous. As of December 8, 2023, Pettiford remains at large, and authorities have urged the public not to approach him if seen.

The incident has deeply affected the local community, especially given its proximity to Barrett Elementary School. Residents have expressed concerns about the safety of their neighborhood, which they typically consider to be quiet. In response to the tragedy, violence prevention groups like Cure Mon Valley have been active in the area, offering resources and outreach efforts to help the community heal and to prevent future incidents of gun violence.

Authorities continue to seek information regarding Pettiford's whereabouts. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the Allegheny County Police Tip Line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous. The investigation remains ongoing as the community grapples with the aftermath of this violent event.
