On the morning of May 20, 2015, a sense of normalcy was shattered in Homestead, Pennsylvania, when 21-year-old Jaymon Gandy, a Black/African American male, was fatally shot. Gandy was walking down Mifflin Street when a dark-colored car approached him shortly before 10:35 a.m. Witnesses reported that at least two individuals exited the vehicle and opened fire, unleashing as many as 10 shots. Gandy was found lying in the road, having succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds within minutes.
The brazen daylight shooting stunned the community and left Gandy's family and friends reeling in grief. Relatives described him as a young man who had recently moved out of town with his mother but had returned to visit his grandmother and four younger siblings. While acknowledging that Gandy had some past legal troubles, including a gun violation and a withdrawn burglary charge, his family and friends insisted he was attempting to turn his life around and did not deserve his violent end.
Allegheny County homicide detectives and Homestead police launched an investigation into the murder. They collected evidence at the scene, including Gandy's cell phone, in the hopes of uncovering leads. In the weeks following the shooting, authorities appealed to the public for assistance, with Crime Stoppers offering a reward for information that could lead to an arrest and conviction. Investigators believed that due to the time of day the shooting occurred, there were likely witnesses who had not yet come forward.
Despite the initial investigation and public pleas for information, the case has grown cold over the years. No suspects have been publicly identified or arrested in connection with the murder of Jaymon Gandy. His death remains an unsolved homicide, leaving his family and community without answers or a sense of justice for the young life that was cut short on that spring morning.
