In the quiet Mayfair neighborhood of Philadelphia, the morning of November 22, 2023, was shattered by a fatal act of violence. Emerson Desouza, a 45-year-old male originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was near his work truck on Sackett Street, just around the corner from his home on Wellington Street, when a confrontation erupted. The dispute was with his neighbor, 42-year-old Walus Mateus.
The argument escalated quickly and tragically. Mateus allegedly shot Desouza once in the chest.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, and Desouza was transported to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The motive for the deadly encounter between the two neighbors has not been publicly disclosed by authorities as the investigation continues.
Less than a day after the shooting, the Philadelphia Police Department apprehended Walus Mateus in connection with the death of his neighbor. Mateus was subsequently charged with murder, carrying an unlicensed firearm, and other related offenses. Following the shooting, Mateus had reportedly fled the scene, but was quickly located and taken into custody by law enforcement.
