On December 12, 2023, 18-year-old Hayden Alexander Lucas of Erie, Pennsylvania, tragically lost his life to a gunshot wound to the neck. The incident occurred at his residence on Lighthouse Street, where he was spending time with friends. According to reports, the group was handling firearms, including a BB gun, and recording a video when a shot was fired, fatally injuring Hayden.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Erie police arrested 17-year-old Shemek S. Clements, charging him as an adult under the Fisher Bill, which allows juveniles accused of violent crimes to be tried as adults. Clements faced charges including aggravated assault and involuntary manslaughter. Two other juveniles present during the incident were also charged with firearm-related offenses under juvenile allegations.
During the investigation, authorities recovered a 9mm shell casing from under a couch at the residence. The two real firearms involved were retrieved after one of the juveniles reportedly removed them from the scene following the shooting. Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook ruled Hayden's death a homicide, marking one of 14 in the city for the year 2023.
In February 2024, Clements waived his preliminary hearing, allowing the case to proceed to court. He remained in custody without bond at that time. Subsequently, in March 2024, Erie County Judge John J. Mead granted a motion by Clements' lawyer to set bond, releasing him on $250,000 unsecured bond and placing him on electronic monitoring.
Hayden's untimely death deeply affected the Erie community. Described as a kind and compassionate individual with an infectious smile, he was remembered fondly by family and friends. A GoFundMe page was established by his family to help cover funeral expenses and honor his memory.
The incident underscored concerns about gun violence and youth safety in Erie. Community leaders emphasized the need for vigilance and proactive measures to prevent such tragedies, highlighting the broader impact on families and the community at large.
