On a Tuesday afternoon in Philadelphia, what started as an ordinary day ended in a tragic loss of life. In the Tioga-Nicetown section of the city, on February 13, 2024, police were called to the 3600 block of North 17th Street just before 3:50 p.m. for a report of a person with a gun. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene inside a Kia Sportage.
Inside the vehicle, a 53-year-old Black male named Lamont Wright was found unresponsive.
He, along with a 32-year-old woman named Denver Newton, had been shot multiple times in the head and torso. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. While Newton was a resident of Southwest Philadelphia, Wright was identified as being from Los Angeles, California.
The investigation into the double homicide is ongoing, with no arrests made so far. Authorities have released surveillance images of two male suspects they believe are responsible for the murders. The footage shows the two men approaching the Kia Sportage, opening fire on Wright and Newton, and then making their escape in a dark-colored Nissan Altima. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
