In the quiet, rural community of Sparta Township, Pennsylvania, a shocking act of violence shattered the peace on February 26, 2024. Rebekah A. Coblentz Byler, a 23-year-old pregnant Amish woman, was found deceased in her home. Her husband, Andy Byler, made the devastating discovery when he returned from a morning of looking at roofing jobs with a neighbor. He found his wife unresponsive in the living room, while their two young children, aged two and three, were physically unharmed in another room.
The subsequent investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police revealed that Rebekah had sustained multiple sharp force wounds to her neck and a gunshot wound to the head. The brutality of the crime sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community, where the Amish and non-Amish residents lived harmoniously. In the days that followed, a sense of fear and disbelief lingered as authorities worked to identify a suspect. The couple's young son provided a crucial early clue, telling investigators that a 'man wearing sneakers' had killed his mother.
Less than a week after the murder, on March 1, 2024, police arrested 52-year-old Shawn Christopher Cranston of Corry, Pennsylvania, a town about eight miles from the Byler residence. Evidence gathered by investigators played a significant role in his arrest. Tire tracks from Cranston's Jeep appeared to match impressions left at the crime scene. A search of his property uncovered a pair of sneakers that seemed to correspond with tread marks found inside the Byler home. Additionally, a piece of a glove discovered at the scene was found to have Cranston's DNA on it.
Cranston was charged with two counts of criminal homicide, one for Rebekah and another for her unborn child, as well as burglary and criminal trespass. Though a definitive motive was not officially released, it has been suggested that the tragic event may have been a case of mistaken identity. Reports indicated that Cranston's grandson had been adopted by a family who had previously lived at the Byler's address, leading to speculation that he may have gone to the wrong house.
Following a preliminary hearing on March 15, 2024, the case was sent to the Crawford County Court of Common Pleas. Shawn Cranston's trial took place in June 2025. After four days of testimony, a jury found him guilty on all charges, including first-degree murder and second-degree murder of an unborn child. In July 2025, he was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole.
