On May 26, 2024, 22-year-old Lay'Onte D. Hammonds was fatally shot outside the Twin City Elks Lodge on Staunton Street in Farrell, Pennsylvania. Responding to reports of a single gunshot around 2:30 a.m., police found Hammonds with a gunshot wound to the head. Officers attempted life-saving measures before transporting him to UPMC Horizon hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:52 a.m.
Witnesses reported that Hammonds was involved in a physical altercation with two individuals, one identified as 23-year-old Yishmael Lee of Sharon, Pennsylvania. During the confrontation, Hammonds reportedly had Lee in a hold when a third man intervened by punching Hammonds in the face. As Hammonds released Lee, Lee allegedly shot him at close range. An arrest warrant was issued for Lee, charging him with first-degree murder and aggravated assault. At the time of the report, Lee was not in custody but was in communication with Farrell police to arrange his surrender.
This incident marked the third shooting in Farrell within a 48-hour period, raising concerns about escalating violence in the community. Earlier, a drive-by shooting occurred on Emerson Avenue, and another shooting took place outside a convenience store on Indiana Avenue, where a man sustained life-threatening injuries. Authorities continued to investigate these incidents, emphasizing the need for increased community safety measures.
Lay'Onte Hammonds was remembered as a spirited individual with an infectious laugh and a larger-than-life personality. A 2019 graduate of Farrell High School, he furthered his education at Laurel Technical Institute, becoming a certified welder in 2021. Despite his trade, he found solace working at Jersey Mike’s. His passing was mourned by his family, friends, and the broader community, who honored his memory with a candlelight vigil and heartfelt tributes.
