In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Farrell, Pennsylvania, a beloved community figure, Brandon D. Smith, a 45-year-old male, was killed. The incident that led to his death began inside a local establishment and spilled out into the street, ending in a fatal shooting.
Known affectionately as 'Coach Bran,' Smith was a well-respected head coach for the Farrell youth programs, where he was known for his nurturing spirit and ability to inspire young athletes.
He was also a maintenance technician at the Mercer County Housing Authority. Many in the community remembered him for his gentle spirit and infectious laughter.
On September 21, 2025, an altercation started inside Yank's Place on Idaho Street. The dispute, involving Smith and another man, Michael Alan Cox Jr., had to be broken up. A woman who was with Cox attempted to get him to leave the bar and was driving him away from the scene. As they drove off, Cox allegedly began shooting from the passenger side of the vehicle.
Smith was struck in the chest by the gunfire. He was rushed to the emergency department at UPMC Horizon Shenango but succumbed to his wound and was pronounced dead at 2:24 a.m. The Mercer County Coroner's Office ruled his death a homicide. The investigation into the shooting was conducted by the City of Farrell Police Department with the assistance of the Pennsylvania State Police.
Following the incident, police identified 34-year-old Michael Alan Cox Jr. of New Castle as the suspect. He later turned himself in to the authorities. Cox was charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault. He was subsequently held at the Mercer County Prison without bail.
