In the early hours of a Sunday morning over Memorial Day weekend, what began as a celebration with friends in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park tragically turned into a scene of violence that would ultimately claim the life of 20-year-old O'Neil Roy Cumberland Jr., a Black male. Just after getting off work on May 26, 2024, his friends persuaded him to join them.
As they were leaving the area, the celebration was shattered by gunfire.
At approximately 5:44 a.m., police responded to reports of a person with a gun on the 2000 block of Belmont Avenue. They arrived to find a silver 2013 Honda Accord that had crashed into a tree. Inside, in the driver's seat, they discovered Cumberland, who had been shot. His friend, who was also in the car, was injured. The friend later recounted that Cumberland’s foot was on the gas pedal when he was shot, and in the chaos, the friend pressed down on his leg, causing the car to speed off before crashing. Cumberland was rushed to the hospital, where he fought for his life for nearly a week before succumbing to his injuries on Saturday, June 1, 2024.
The death of the young man, known affectionately as 'OJ' to his family, has left his loved ones devastated and searching for answers. His mother described him as a loving and caring person who was not involved in any gangs or drama, making the senseless act of violence even more difficult to comprehend. Five months after the shooting, his family continues to seek justice, expressing their belief that someone must have information about what happened that morning.
As of now, no arrests have been made in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Philadelphia Police Department continues to investigate the homicide. A reward of up to $20,000 is being offered for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for O'Neil Cumberland's death. His family remains hopeful that someone will come forward and break the silence surrounding this tragic loss.
