On June 4, 2024, 65-year-old Patricia Shinn was fatally shot in her backyard on the 7100 block of Montague Street in Philadelphia's Mayfair neighborhood. The incident occurred shortly before noon, when neighbors reported hearing gunshots following a heated argument between Shinn and her neighbor, 64-year-old William Pulver. Upon arrival, police found Shinn with multiple gunshot wounds; she was pronounced dead at the scene around 12:18 p.m.
Neighbors indicated that Shinn and Pulver had a contentious relationship spanning several years, marked by frequent disputes that occasionally escalated to physical confrontations. One neighbor, Annemarie Woltemate, mentioned that the two had been "going at each other for the last two years," with tensions escalating over time. The day before the shooting, police had been called to the residence due to a confrontation in which Pulver accused the Shinns of stealing his iPad and allegedly pushed Patricia.
Following the shooting, Pulver retreated into his home, leading to a brief barricade situation. Police negotiators were able to persuade him to surrender peacefully after about an hour. Pulver was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, possession of an instrument of crime, and firearm violations. He was denied bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 24.
The tragic incident has left the community in shock. Neighbors described Shinn as a kind and friendly individual who always greeted children in the neighborhood. Maribel Ortiz, a nearby resident, expressed her sorrow, stating, "It hurt. She was a neighbor, you know? Neighbors are supposed to be family."
This case highlights the potential dangers of unresolved neighbor disputes and has prompted discussions about community relations and the importance of addressing conflicts before they escalate to violence.
