In the Oxford Circle neighborhood of Philadelphia, a bright summer afternoon was shattered by a hail of gunfire that ended the life of 16-year-old Jamil Wyatt. On Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at approximately 4:04 p.m., the young Black male was walking to a store when he was ambushed in a rear driveway on the 1200 block of Van Kirk Street. The attack was sudden and brutal, with police later describing it as an 'execution-style' homicide.
Surveillance footage from the area captured the
chilling sequence of events. Three individuals, all dressed in black and wearing masks, emerged from a white 2013 Nissan Sentra with light-tinted windows. They immediately began chasing Jamil, firing their weapons as he ran for his life. After being struck multiple times, he collapsed to the ground. Two of the gunmen then stood over him and continued to fire at close range. Investigators recovered more than 50 spent shell casings from the scene, a testament to the sheer violence of the assault.
Police officers arrived to find Jamil unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Jefferson Frankford Hospital, where medical staff fought to save him, but he succumbed to his injuries later that afternoon. At the time of his death, Jamil had been temporarily staying with a family in the neighborhood.
The Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit is actively investigating the murder. While they believe Jamil was targeted, a motive for the shooting has not yet been determined. The three suspects fled the scene in the white Nissan Sentra and remain at large. No arrests have been made in the case, and no weapons were recovered from the scene. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as the search for Jamil's killers continues.
