On the evening of September 19, 2024, 48-year-old Philadelphia resident Kahleem Mitchell was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting near his home. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on the 700 block of South 52nd Street in West Philadelphia. Mitchell was standing in front of a beer distributor when a white SUV approached, and multiple shots were fired from the vehicle.
He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead at 9:46 p.m.
Investigators recovered 35 shell casings at the scene, indicating the use of two different firearms: 11 casings from a 9mm gun and 24 from a .40 caliber weapon. Surveillance footage captured the white SUV pulling up to the location and the subsequent gunfire. A woman who was conversing with Mitchell at the time of the shooting was unharmed, and police are seeking to interview her for additional information.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Philadelphia Police Department is actively investigating the case and has offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
