In the East Germantown section of Philadelphia, on the evening of March 27, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the daily rhythm of the neighborhood, leaving a family and a community to grapple with the sudden loss of 16-year-old Semaj Fields. Semaj, a Black male, was a ninth-grade student at Ben Franklin High School. The tragic event unfolded shortly before 6:40 p.m. on the first block of Wister Street, near Germantown Avenue.
