In the early morning hours of October 6, 2024, the life of 17-year-old Amber Lewis was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire that erupted at a party in North Philadelphia. A Black female, Amber was a student at Mastbaum High School, known for her magnetic personality and a smile that could light up a room. Those who knew her described her as the life of the party, someone who could make anyone laugh and feel at ease.
The shooting occurred just after 12:30 a.m. in the courtyard of a housing development on the 600 block of Franklin Place, where Amber resided. Four masked individuals, all wearing dark clothing, unleashed a barrage of nearly 60 shots into the gathering. In the chaos that ensued, Amber was struck in the chest. She was rushed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Two other young women were also wounded in the attack; another 17-year-old was critically injured with multiple gunshot wounds, and a 20-year-old was shot in the leg and listed in stable condition.
In the aftermath, police recovered 58 bullet casings from the scene. The suspects were seen fleeing in a dark blue BMW, driven by a fifth individual, heading south on Eighth Street. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the identities of the suspects remain unknown. The Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case and has appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for Amber's death.
