On February 28, 2023, at approximately 8:45 p.m., deputies from the Robeson County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting incident in the 2400 block of Highway 72 West in Lumberton, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 44-year-old Coleman Junior Fields deceased at the scene. A female victim was also present and received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
The following day, March 1, 2023, authorities arrested 26-year-old Quinton Robert Brayboy of Lumberton in connection with the shooting. Brayboy was charged with second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon. He was subsequently released on bond.
In December 2023, Brayboy was implicated in another fatal shooting. On December 14, deputies responded to a shooting at 79 Dreamcatcher Drive in Pembroke, where they found 26-year-old Zachary Locklear of Maxton suffering from a gunshot wound. Locklear was transported to UNC Southeastern Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Brayboy surrendered to law enforcement on December 15 and was charged with first-degree murder and discharging a weapon within an enclosure to incite fear. He is currently held at the Robeson County Detention Center without bond.
Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins expressed concerns regarding Brayboy's release on bond after the initial murder charge, emphasizing the need for public safety and questioning the decision to allow a violent offender back into the community. The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate both cases and urges anyone with information to come forward.
