Raekwon Powell, a 25-year-old African American male from Lumberton, North Carolina, was tragically shot and killed on October 15, 2020. The incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. on the 350 block of Quail Run Road. Deputies from the Robeson County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and found Powell beside the roadway suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite lifesaving efforts by onlookers and Robeson County EMS personnel, Powell was pronounced dead upon arrival at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was the result of an argument that occurred just minutes before the incident. Two men, Curtis A. Floyd, 32, and Darien D. Lewis, 29, both from Lumberton, were identified as suspects in the case. Both men turned themselves in to the Robeson County Sheriff's Office and were charged with first-degree murder and felony conspiracy. Floyd and Lewis were taken to the Robeson County Detention Center, where they were held without bail for the murder charges. Additionally, Lewis was given a $100,000 bail for the conspiracy charge, while Floyd received a $25,000 bail for the same offense.
The Robeson County Sheriff's Office Homicide Division conducted the investigation into Powell's death. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of escalating arguments and the impact of gun violence on the community. The arrests of Floyd and Lewis brought some measure of justice for Powell's family, but the loss of a young life left a lasting void in the hearts of those who knew him.
