On October 19, 2022, Patrick K. McMillan, 47, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Strickland's death. McMillan, who is Strickland's stepson, was taken into custody and held at the Robeson County Detention Center with a $250,000 secured bond. The Robeson County Sheriff's Office Homicide Division and the District Attorney's Office were involved in the investigation and prosecution of the case.
