In the early hours of March 5, 2023, Raleigh police responded to a shooting incident in the 3400 block of New Birch Drive, a commercial area near Rock Quarry Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals with gunshot wounds: a 34-year-old man, David Chavis, and an unidentified woman. Both victims were transported to a nearby hospital, where Chavis succumbed to his injuries. The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was expected to recover.
