Jewan Merkel Philip, a 22-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on July 11, 2020, in Raleigh, North Carolina. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 1:42 a.m., on the 1600 block of Burgundy Street. Raleigh police officers responded to a call concerning a shooting and upon arrival, they found Philip suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was immediately transported to WakeMed, where he succumbed to his injuries later that afternoon.
The investigation into Philip's death revealed that the shooter was sitting in his vehicle when Philip approached him with a firearm in his hand. In response, the man in the vehicle opened fire on Philip and then left the area. The shooter later turned himself in to Durham police. After consulting with the Wake County District Attorney's Office, it was determined that no charges would be filed against the shooter, as the circumstances suggested self-defense. Consequently, no suspects are being sought in connection with the shooting.
Despite the tragic nature of the incident, the case did not result in any arrests or further litigation. The Raleigh Police Department continues to encourage anyone with additional information about the shooting to come forward. The community remains affected by the loss of a young life, and the incident serves as a somber reminder of the complexities and consequences of gun violence.
