Connor Mickens, a 3-year-old boy from Jacksonville, Florida, tragically lost his life on October 19, 2017. The incident occurred during a violent confrontation at his family's home involving his mother's ex-boyfriend, Brian Littles, and her new boyfriend. Connor, who was caught in the crossfire, was shot in the head and succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The young boy's death was a result of a heated exchange that escalated when Littles, 23 at the time, entered the home uninvited through an unlocked window. Littles confronted the couple with a revolver, leading to a shootout where Connor was fatally wounded.
Following the incident, Brian Littles turned himself in to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on October 20, 2017. Initially arrested on a gun charge linked to a juvenile warrant from 2010, Littles was later charged with second-degree felony murder, two counts of attempted murder, and armed burglary. The charges stemmed from the fact that under Florida’s felony murder law, a defendant can be charged with murder if a death occurs during the commission of a felony. Littles pleaded guilty to the charges of second-degree felony murder, armed burglary, and possession of a firearm by a delinquent as part of a plea deal in September 2018. This plea agreement led to the dropping of the attempted murder charges.
On October 16, 2018, Circuit Judge Steven Whittington sentenced Brian Littles to 35 years in prison for the murder of Connor Mickens. The sentence included 30 years for the armed burglary count and 15 years for possession of a firearm by a delinquent, with all sentences to be served concurrently. The court documents revealed that Littles and Connor's mother, Rashaela Mickens, had been in a relationship that ended after three years. On the day of the incident, they had been exchanging increasingly hostile text messages. Littles' uninvited entry into the home and the subsequent confrontation led to the tragic death of the young boy.
