On May 18, 2023, at approximately 5:45 p.m., 17-year-old Raynard Milton Mahoney Jr. was fatally shot in the 7300 block of Larwill Lane in northwest Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon arrival, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers found Mahoney suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased.
In the immediate aftermath, CMPD detained a person of interest on weapons charges but did not release further details at that time.
Nearly two months later, on July 10, 2023, a 17-year-old suspect surrendered to authorities at the CMPD Law Enforcement Center in Uptown Charlotte. After an interview with detectives, the juvenile was charged with murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and minor in possession of a firearm. The victim's family was notified of the arrest.
The investigation into Mahoney's death remains active and ongoing. CMPD continues to encourage anyone with information about the incident to contact their Homicide Unit or provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
