The police identified the suspect as 36-year-old Jeffvory Hughey, who was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a
felon, and shooting into an occupied property. Hughey voluntarily came to police headquarters, where he was interviewed by detectives and then placed under arrest for murder. Detectives are not seeking any additional suspects, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The funeral services for Jonathan Vereen were held at Hopewell AME Church in Andrews, South Carolina, on September 24, 2016.
