On June 5, 2023, at approximately 3:11 p.m., officers from the Fayetteville Police Department responded to a reported shooting in the 1900 block of Louise Circle. Upon arrival, they discovered 25-year-old Xavier Lee Tyreek Copeland inside a residence, suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers and Emergency Medical Service personnel initiated life-saving measures, and Copeland was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The Fayetteville Police Department's Homicide Unit launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Copeland's death. As of June 28, 2023, detectives were still working to determine the cause and manner of his death. The department urged anyone with information to contact Detective M. Waters at (910) 635-4978 or to submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
Despite these efforts, no arrests have been reported in connection with Copeland's death. The investigation remains active, and authorities continue to seek information from the public to identify any suspects involved in this case.
Copeland's passing was a significant loss to his family and community. Born on April 17, 1998, he was survived by his parents, Leonard Copeland Jr. and Jewmerico Douglas; his two sons, Maceo Maurice Lee Copeland and Messiah Tyreek Lee Copeland; his life partner, Melina Denise Daniels; and several siblings and extended family members. A visitation and celebration of life were held on June 22, 2023, at South End Missionary Baptist Church in Fayetteville.
