On July 2, 2023, 28-year-old Marquis LaQuan Powell of Fayetteville, North Carolina, succumbed to a gunshot wound after being transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital by acquaintances. The Scotland County Sheriff's Office reported that these individuals were uncooperative with law enforcement, hindering the investigation.
